A 1980s icon that combines comfort with quirkiness.

MoMA Exclusive: An eye-catching classic, the Experiment Chair combines the profile of a traditional upholstery lounge chair with brightly colored, quirky arms and chrome tubing. Conceived in 1982 by Finnish designer Yrjö Kukkapuro, a designer with work in MoMA’s collection, the Experiment Lounge Chair merges ergonomic comfort with structural detail. This version of the chair features upholstery in ultramarine blue fabric, symbolizing waves on a lake, and bright red arms, denoting fire. The chair is crafted in Poland from solid beech wood, chromed steel, PU foam, and plywood. Kukkapuro was a leading figure in the Finnish functionalism movement, famous for their maxim “form follows function” and espousing a minimalist approach to design. For the Experiment Chair, Kukkapuro sought to add art to Functionalism, bringing a romantic flair to an everyday functional piece of furniture. The Experiment Lounge Chair measures 30h x 22w x 32”d with a 15h seat and 21” seat depth. Comes flat-packed, easy assembly required.
