MoMA Exclusive: Known for signature geometric designs, BAO BAO is the main accessories line by Japanese designer Issey Miyake who has work in MoMA’s collection. Miyake came up with the name as an homage to architect Frank Gehry’s exploration of “shapes made by chance” when designing Spain’s Bilbao Museum. Featuring an accordion-like silhouette, this Beyond Tote Bag was inspired by the pleated and tubular “Flying Saucer” dress from the designer’s spring 1994 collection. The flexible, interlocking triangle tiles let the bag transform shape depending on what daily essentials you put inside.
